A Life of Leadership and Service Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna, commonly known as SM Krishna, was born on May 1, 1932, in a small village in Karnataka. Krishna served as the Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1999 to 2004, and later as a Union Minister in various capacities. He first entered the political arena in the 1960s and was soon recognized for his astute leadership. Krishna became the face of the Indian National Congress (INC) in Karnataka, leading the state’s development through several significant reforms and policies. However, the court emphasised that the stage III measures must resume if the AQI exceeds 350 and Stage IV restrictions must be reinstated if the AQI crosses 400. Visionary of ‘Brand Bengaluru’ One of the most defining aspects of SM Krishna’s tenure as Chief Minister was his vision for Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka, and its transformation into a global IT hub. His efforts in branding Bengaluru as an international city played a pivotal role in shaping its modern identity as the “Silicon Valley of India.” Krishna initiated crucial reforms that attracted global investments and tech companies to Bengaluru, catapulting it to the forefront of India’s economic transformation. Under his leadership, Bengaluru saw the establishment of vital infrastructure, including modern roads, tech parks, and international airports, which laid the foundation for the city’s explosive growth in the IT and startup sectors. Krishna’s unwavering belief in the potential of Bengaluru’s human capital and his commitment to creating a business-friendly environment were instrumental in making the city one of the top destinations for IT giants like Infosys, Wipro, and other multinational corporations. Political Career and Accomplishments SM Krishna’s political career spanned several decades, during which he held numerous important roles. He served as the Member of Parliament and represented the state of Karnataka at the national level. His tenure as Union Minister for External Affairs under Prime Minister Manmohan Singh (2009-2012) added another layer to his legacy, where he represented India on the world stage with dignity and poise. Krishna also had an instrumental role in strengthening ties with countries like the United States and those in the Middle East, contributing to India’s growing global presence. His contributions to education, healthcare, and infrastructure development in Karnataka have left a lasting impact on the state, improving the lives of millions. A Statesman Beyond Politics SM Krishna was not just a politician but a statesman whose contributions went beyond political rhetoric. His diplomatic skills and commitment to inclusive development made him one of the most respected leaders of his time. His efforts to bridge divides, both within his party and in the broader political spectrum, are often remembered as an example of integrity and public service. Even after his political career, Krishna remained an influential figure, providing guidance and wisdom to both political leaders and the general public. His commitment to Karnataka’s progress never wavered, and he continued to be involved in public life, offering advice on governance and development. A Legacy of Growth and Vision SM Krishna’s death marks the end of an era in Karnataka politics. His vision of creating a thriving, modern, and global Karnataka will continue to guide the state for years to come. While his legacy is defined by his focus on technological innovation, economic growth, and infrastructure development, his human touch and commitment to social welfare are equally notable. As Karnataka mourns the loss of one of its greatest sons, the people of Bengaluru, in particular, will always remember him as the leader who helped turn the city into the tech capital of India. The moniker “Brand Bengaluru” will forever be associated with SM Krishna, a man who saw potential where others saw only challenges. His passing leaves a deep void in the state’s political landscape, but his vision, especially for Bengaluru, will live on as a beacon of progress, development, and hope for generations to come.
